When working with SAP software, various types of keys may be needed such as license keys to activate the product, migration keys, developer and object (SSCR) keys, plus your own namespaces to modify it.
License Keys

For most on premise products, you require license keys before you can use the product. License keys are associated with a system on your landscape, and therefore you need to first select a system and then manage its license key.

To request license keys, you need the authorization Request License Keys, if you are unsure of what your authorizations are then you may check your authorizations under your profile. To extend your authorizations please contact your company's super administrator.

Note: Analytics Solutions from SAP has emergency License Keys (zip file) you can use while your request for a permanent license key is being processed.

Developer & Object Keys (SSCR)

The SSCR (SAP Software Change Registration) is a procedure which registers all manual changes to SAP sources and SAP Dictionary objects. If an ABAP developer wants to change them in an SAP system, the system will prompt for two access keys:

  • Developer key to register a particular user as a developer. This key must be entered only once.
  • Object key to allow changes to SAP sources or SAP dictionary objects. An object must be registered when it is changed by a registered developer for the first time. If the object is changed at a later point in time, the key is no longer requested.
If you modify several programs, individual object keys will be required for each of them.

Both keys can be requested through the SAP Software Change Request (SSCR) Key application. To use the application, you must have the Register Object and Developer Keys (or at least Register Object Keys) authorization. To request it, please contact your company's super administrator.

SAP matchcodes and tuning measures such as the setup of database indices and buffers are excluded from the registration.

Download the help guide for more information on requesting SSCR keys.

Migration Keys

When an SAP System is exported or imported for the purpose of performing a heterogeneous system copy (SAP OS/DB Migration), a migration key must be entered into the migration tool. Each OS/DB Migration requires its own key. It is assigned on the basis of the installation number and additional system-specific information.

The Migration Keys application enables SAP customers to request migration keys for their SAP systems online. It also offers a detailed overview of all systems for which migration keys have been requested.

Development Namespaces

Development namespaces enable you to develop enhancements and solutions without having to agree on naming conventions with third parties. Additionally, you can deploy your enhancements and solutions in any system around the world without the risk of name conflicts.

SAP partners and customers can exclusively reserve and use development namespaces from R/3 Release 4.0.

SAP allocates namespaces centrally to ensure they are exclusive. Partners and customers can only develop in reserved namespaces if their system includes a namespace-specific license key.

United States Postal Services (USPS) Unlock Code

Unlock codes are needed when you encounter a false-positive record in the United States Postal Service's Delivery Point Validation (DPV) or Locatable Address Conversion System (LACSLink) directories. Encountering a false-positive record causes DPV or LACSLink to lock, which halts job processing. The unlock code will allow you to unlock DPV or LACSLink and quickly resume job processing.

More information can be found in SAP Knowledge Base Article 1379554 - Information on DPV and LACSLink unlocking.
